Are studios and production Companies complicit in affecting the moral standards of  consumers?

More and more frequently, the media we consume on a daily basis is created to shock and assault viewers with disturbing and morally reprehensible images. There are programs that are based solely in the glorification of violence, such as UFC, shows that include violence as a main feature as well, such as WWE shows, and even taped fictional shows are featuring more and more “anti-heroes” that commit crimes and murder people for sometimes no plot progression other than just to shock the viewer (Scandal, House of Cards, and The Sopranos to name a few).

Looking at this, are the people creating these materials and content doing so because the people demand the violence and shock factor, or are they creating this content because it is easier to shock than to actually create compelling storylines? Both seem valid, but there seems to have been a gradual shift to using more of this type of content in recent years. If the base of consumers have shifted to get used to this type of content, is it possible to shift back to less violent, shocking images but still have compelling storylines?
